Our first stop in the most traditional village of the island ,Anogia. This village is a large mountain village with population of 5,000 and lays on Mount Psiloritis in the central Cretan prefecture of Rethymno. The village has two aspects, our guide will escort you and guide you until the Old Anogia, which is the lower part ,reached selling Cretan traditional products. You are more likely to see men wearing the Cretan baggy trousers tucked into their boots ,heads decorated with nets, here than just about anywhere else in Crete. We will have the opportunity to go in one of the traditional houses in Anogia to see the handmade souvenirs and watch the old way that women were used to fix handmade blankets ,clothes etc.

We continue to the famous Sfendoni cave , in Zoniana village. The cave is one of the most important caves in Greece , covering an area of about 3,000 square meters. The cave’s unique and rare beauty mesmerizes everybody , establishing it as one of Crete’s most beautiful caves.Visitors are allowed to explore a route of about 270m, along which they can admire a variety of impressive formations.Large columns create labyrinthine compartments inside the cave and stalactites and stalagmites of different colors and shapes decorate the cave’s chambers.

After Sfendoni cave it’s lunch time in Anogia village, in the tavern where you have magnificent view of the village and the surrounding area, a perfect place to capture the beauty of real Crete in your photos. The cuisine of Anogia is typical of the traditional Cretan one.The wealth and the quality of the products of the island over the centuries had as a result a cuisine with unique taste and freshness. The secret of Cretan diet is the rich variety of products of Cretan land and the olive oil, which is used in all the dishes .Cheese, honey , aromatic plants and many other products of Psiloritis are the basis for the miracle called the cuisine of Anogia.Top tastes are “ofto” and cheese. These are the true , authentic tastes of real Crete.

On the way back to our hotels,we make a stop in Axos village and visit the Monastery Dioskouri. In Axos village we will visit the museum and the workshop and find out the aesthetic and artistic proposal , traditional elements, folklore elements (for example, the marking of the animals), sociological data (the family structure, the position of man and woman), historical evidences etc. After the museum we make our last stop in Dioskouri Monastery ,one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. In the center of the courtyard there is the church of St.George.The old icon of St.George is famous to the Cretan herders who swear on that when they are accused of stealing animals.

Imbros gorge is the second most popular gorge for walkers in Crete after the gorge of Samaria. In addition, the village of Imbros is a charming mountain village, the starting point of the gorge.

Comparing to Samaria , Imbros Gorge is much easier to walk  : the walking distance is 8 km,total descent is around 600m and the average walking time is about 2.5 hours. The path is generally easier underfoot. This is the sort of walk that you could easily walk with children. It also would not need to take a whole long day.

The gorge is fairly narrow (under 2 meters wide at one point !) and has plenty of trees you will have shade most of the time. The gorge is much smaller in height as well as length and less majestic than Samaria but this also means that at all times you are right next to the slopes and cliffs and has a much better opportunity to see plants and flowers at close range. And there are plenty of interesting flowers to see, especially in the spring.

After around 90 minutes walk from the gorge entrance booth (2hours if you walk really slowly) you will pass an impressive stone arch on your right. After this the gorge widens a little and after around 15 more minutes you get to the road and the village of Komitades where you’ll find quite a few tavernas.

The village Komitades is the end of the gorge and the meeting pont for the bus to pick you up.

Type of excursion : Adventure -Educational-Full day

Should take : Proper walking shoes, photo camera , a bottle of water and fruits or sweets during the walk.

Not included-pay on the spot : Imbros Gorge entrance fee : 2,00 euro

No visit, no vacation to Crete is complete without crossing the Samaria Gorge.

Samaria Gorge was acknowledged in 2010 as one of the wildest, most virgin and unique natural parks in the world and was included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) of UNESCO.

Samaria Gorge Tour Overview
Our adventure starts very early in the morning since the gorge is situated on the western side of the island.

Our first stop is in the vicinity of Rethimnon. We have the chance to get our breakfast before moving on to Omalos Plateau. The walk starts from Xiloskalo. At the entrance of the gorge we enter this vast canyon of 18 klm that is considered to be the longest in Europe. Canyon width varies from 2 to 40 meters and a depth of 250-600 meters. We usually need 6-7 hours to cross the rocky gorge  of Samaria down to the shore.

The path follows the route of Taras, a river with gurgling lucid water. It gave its name to the ancient town which was located at the end of the gorge. On the way we can get a glimpse of the caves that formed a natural shelter for the Cretans. In war times and now they are the natural habitat of the well-known wild goats, or kri-kri as they are also called. Halfway we come across the village of Santa Maria, which was abandoned by its last inhabitants in 1962.

The amazingly wild and unspoiled scenery of Samaria, as well as the vegetation that we come in view of during hiking, is unequalled in relation to those in other places on Crete.

Highlights of Samaria Gorge hiking
Extraordinary rock formations,
Indigenous rare plants, flower and bird species,
Rough downward ground,
Impressive and primitive view,
Exquisite landscape that has been under no human intervention,
Unique sensation of awe and infinite wonder for the untouched grandeur will always be engraved on our memory.

Three kilometers prior to our exiting this majestic gorge, we reach the Iron Gates (Sideroportes), the narrowest spot of the route, just a few meters wide, but 300 meters high – an amazing contradiction that can cause nothing but awe.

A bit later we arrive in the small fishing village of Agia Roumeli, where we have quite a long time to lunch and get a refreshing swim in the deep blue, crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea, before boarding the ship that leads us back along the coast to the village of Sfakia, where we catch the bus for the return trip.

On the way back we have the chance to admire Imbros Gorge, as well as the villages of Askifou and Vrisses.
An excursion for those who feel adventurous and are pretty fit. A tip for the ones who join in: good hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, an extra pair of socks, swimsuit and a light jacket for the evening hours are essential.

HISTORY

According to a legend, Santorini rose up from the depths of the sea and this, in combination with the eruption of the volcano, has led scientists to correlate and compare it to the lost city of Atlantis. The first signs of life were evident as far back as the mid 3rd century B.C. (Early Copper Age). The first name given to the island was Strongyle (“the circular one”) due to its shape. According to Herodotus however, the island was later renamed to Kalliste (“the most beautiful one”) due to its incomparable beauty. Once the island was colonized by Spartans (following the Phoenicians) the island changed its name to Thera, named after the Spartan leader of the time. Finally, the name Santorini , which is a contraction of the name Santa Irini , was given to the island by the Latin Empire referencing the name of the old cathedral of Saint Irene , the ruins of which were discovered in 1992 at the foot of the mountain in the village of Perissa.

The large volcanic eruption  of circa 1613 B.C. (Late Copper Age) , and the following collapse of the volcano’s magma chamber /reservoir, lead to the formation of the caldera (a large underwater cauldron-like depression).

The rare natural beauty, the rich history and the unique geomorphology of Santorini have contributed to it becoming one of the world’s top and most sought after destinations. It has become the subject of study for numerous influential scientists as well as an inspiration to famous poets and writers. It is worth noting that the island was even mentioned in Jules Verne’s novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”, as well as Santorini being his main source of inspiration in writing his novel “The Mysterious Island”

FIRA

The wondrous capital of Santorini majestically dominates the west side of the island, built high up on the sharp Cliffside at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level. White –washed  houses, scenic alleyways and important museums (Museum of Prehistoric Thera, Archaeological Museum of Thera ,Megaro Gizi ) make up a Cyclades settlement of outstanding beauty which simultaneously has all the necessary infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, commercial  shops) so as to satisfy even the most demanding visitors.

FIROSTEFANI

The “Crown of Fira”, as the name suggests, makes up a separate settlement on the outskirts of Fira. The walk from Firostefani to Fira constitutes a truly unique experience since what truly stands out is the blue dome of Aghioi Theodoroi church (Saints Theodore) which has been featured is countless pictures and images worldwide.

OIA

At the north section of the island, at a distance of 11 km from Fira, resides the settlement of Oia, which a true architectural gem…with its rock-hewn buildings and imposing so-called “captain’s houses. Its renowned sunset provides a magical and almost spiritual experience, with people arriving from around the world so as to gaze at its enchanting grandeur.

PERISSA

The beautiful and gorgeous beaches of Perissa and of Perivolos together comprise an extensive coastline which surpasses 5 kilometers .The fine black sand, the crystal clear water and all the comforts provided by an organized beachfront creates ideal conditions for all visitors that wish to truly enjoy the sea and taste exquisite local dishes.

THE ANCIENT VINEYARD

Excavation findings reveal that grapes were grown and cultivated on the island at least since the 17th century B.C.The ancient vine varieties, the unique climate and ecosystem of Santorini and the fertile volcanic soil contribute to the production of high quality wine. The rock-hewn wineries constitute quite a wonderful and rustic sightseeing destination for the island.
